, and is subject to over-flow, during periods of very high water, from theYuba and Bear rivers. This fact and the sometimesquite heavy current of the overflow necessitated aclass of roadbed construction which would at once re-sist any current pressure to which it might be sub-ject and at the same time turn the currents into properchannels through culverts and other openings. Thishas been accomplished by first building substantialpile trestle and then filling it out with an embankmentconsisting of the tailing cobbles and gravel from thedredger mines at Oroville. This material will remainin place under the most adverse conditions of floodand current. Dikes and levees are now nuder construction forthe reclamation of this district. The last thirty miles of the road before reachingSacramento is in a flat but well-drained country, andis not subject to the possibility of overflow. Thereare throughout this section a number of well laid-outtown-sites and from the frequent sales of real estate.
