he sameidea in raying the hypophysis in growthdisturbances. Levy and Weinstein (7)sought to establish a stimulating dosefor the adrenal by measuring the effecton the blood pressure after regionalirradiation. They came to no definiteconclusion, however. Szego and Roth(8) in studying gastric secretion afterirradiation found that only doses greaterthan an erythema dose gave first evi-dence of irritation, to be followed laterby depression. Brugel found onlya lowered secretion after irradiation. On the other hand, it is to be recalledthat irradiation of the gastric region(entailing as it does simultaneous ef-fects on the liver, the pancreas, thespleen and the colon as well as loopsof the small intestines) is most fre-quently followed by evidence of in-toxication (Miescher) ,in) the effectof which must naturally influence thestomach secretion. Perhaps one of the most interestingapplications of this idea is that whichconcerns the pancreas. We shall notgo into the extensive literature concern-
Text Appearing After Image:
ORGAN STIMI LATIOX PETERSEN* AND SAELHOF ing the effect of irradiation on the dia-betic individual. The general experiencehas been that irradiation, particularlyof the abdominal viscera, or of neo-plasms, results in an increased sugarmobilization. This corresponds to thegeneral effect that we get in the dia-betic after protein therapy, afterhemorrhage, after adrenalin injection, etc. Apart from the work of Stephanno efforts have heretofore been reporteddealing with the direct stimulation ofthe pancreas; we should, therefore, like to present some experimental evi-dence in this connection, carried outon partially depancreatized dogs. Theanimals were, of course, kept on a con-stant diet and the effect of irradiationon the sugar output studied. The following two experiments aretypical and similar in character to thosewhich we previously described <11). Dog No. 171, Chart No. I.—Weighed 6800 gm. Operated Oct. 7,1 921, when 1 4 gm. of pancreatic tis-sue were removed. The animal madean un
