Pain is en-tirely absent or slight, though exag-gerated movements of the hip-jointcause pain of slight degree. Nightcries usually do not occur in this af-fection. The majority of the casesshow evidence of slight atrophy of theepiphysis and of the neck of the femur.We often get shortening of one-quarterto one-half an inch, and the trochanteris most frequently elevated and may beprominent. The children usually give a previousrecord of good health and are oftenvery active. There is little or no pain,no previous condition of disease, andno sign of active infection. The ac-tivity, development and growth of thechild are usually not affected. As arule the patients history is negative,but the ordinary diseases of childhoodoccur in various individuals. Theremay be no family history of tubercu-losis or syphilis, and the Von Pirquetand Wassermann tests may be nega-
