Its lake frontage, its easy accessto the coal fields of Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia,its proximity to Ohios limestone and standstone quarries,and the low cost of water transportation from the LakeSuperior ore fields have made its growth inevitable. Thereare few spots on the continent to which raw materials maybe brought with facility along many lines, and few so ad-vantageously situated in the matter of wonderful marketswith steady buying power. Cleveland has been an industrial center for only sixty-one years. In 1858, indeed, it was only the fortieth ofAmerican cities, a lake port of no importance and the cen-ter of a casual sort of land commerce from territory imme-diately tributary.
