ted of two permanentmolars erupted in the upper jaw, while not a trace is to be seen ofany permanent molars in the lower jaw. At the same time the right superior temporary lateral incisorhas fallen out prematurely, causing a depression of the arch atthat point and a wide separation of the permanent central incisors. At eight years of age the Ainsworth fixtures were placed onthe temporary teeth to broaden the arches both above and below togive room for the eruption of the permanent teeth. Attached tothe lower molar bands on their lingual sides were two wire springsmade after the Jackson pattern, with a stronger arch wire passingbeneath the tongue, to which these wire springs were tied with silkwhile the bands were being cemented to place. After the cement was fully set, the silk was cut, releasing thesprings, which then pressed forward lightly but continuously onthe lingual sides of the lower incisors ; and being held downwardby some little projectfng lugs extending backward from bands

After some spreading had been done, intermaxillary elasticswere applied to act reciprocally, that is to say, to draw the uppermolars forward while an equal pressure was exerted backward onthe lower molars. While getting the principal molars into proper articulationwith each other, care was taken at the same time to advance theupper incisors also until there was room enough between the firstpermanent molars and the incisors for all the bicuspids and cuspidsto erupt easily, and until the lower incisors were formed into an
