e different forms, were submittedto me, by means of which I was enabled to confirm Mr. Ander-sons observations in almost every minute particular. Amongstthese one was evidently produced by a parasitic fungus, and, asmight be expected from the deleterious action of many kinds ofmycelium on vegetable tissues with which it comes in contact, it isone of the most destructive. It begins on the young leaves, causing abrownish ill-defined spot; after a time, this exhibits different shadesof olivaceous brown, and the parenchyma of the leaf becomes quitepulpy and semiputrescent. On the underside of the leaf little raiseddots are seen which are caused by the cysts of a fungus beneaththem. The parenchym is more or less traversed by hyaline my-celium with jointed threads, and each cyst or perithecium, whichis of a pale umber, is surrounded by a broad border of hyaline, per-fectly colourless, jointed threads, the upper joints of which aremore or less swollen. In this condition I have seen no fruit.

REV. M. J. BERKELEY—ON A PARASITIC EUNGUS. 27 Sometimes the leaves pass rapidly into a state of decay; but occa-sionally the parenchym dries up, the spots become bleached, but aresurrounded by a dark border, and studded with the concentricallyarranged perithecia. In these I have detected spores which arebroader at one end and uniseptate. Occasionally, as in the caserepresented in our figure, the disease commences again in thesame leaf; so that the incipient and old stages may be comparedtogether. I have since had an opportunity of studying the fungusin an intermediate condition on Lycaste SMnneri, and have seenthe spores seated on their sporophores. It is extremely important that this form of spot should be ac-curately distinguished from the other forms, and I trust that thefigures now given will enable any accurate observer to distinguishit, even without having recourse to the microscope. In the caseof such a minute plant the cultivator cannot be expected to verifyevery point, and
