BRACKFIELD BAWN PROCEEDINGS 223 the ruins, bears the date 1618 There are some fragments of a tomb-stone with the arms of MacSwiney, and perhaps on this accomit theruins are absurdly named locally and on the Ordnance Maps, bothof the earlier and the later editions, MacSwynes Castle. MacSwiney of Fanad had a castle here on the beach, which in1587 was the scene of the kidnapping of Aodh Ruadh 0 Domhnaill,Red Hugh ODonnell, planned by Sir John Perrot. The castle,says 0 Clerigh, was on the edge of the strand, and a church hadbeen founded there close by in honour of Mary Mother of the Lord,to celebrate the canonical service and the Mass, and it was muchfrequented by the laity and clergy of the neighbouring district.
