In the morning, while on anerrand at the station a servant noticed him on the plat-form, and recognized him again in the afternoon. Hebecame interested and engaged him in conversation suf-ficiently to find out that he had been on his way up toBombay with an uncle in faith that he was to be taughta trade in the metropolis. On arriving at Sholapur, bothalighted for the ten or fifteen minutes that the trainwaited, but at the end of that time, the uncle was not to befound, and the train went along without him. What todo, he did not know. He was only twelve years old.With a little persuasion Narayan accompanied the servantto the Mission compound with his bundle of clothing. Itis a pity that a camera did not snap him that day hecame. Hewas bright looking and attractive. We found he hadbeen in school in the Kanarese-speaking country and hadstudied up to the fourth standard, and also had a smat-tering of English. He had the added accomplishmentof being able to speak and understand Marathi. Because he did not know his letters in the latter tongue,however, he was obliged to enter the First Standard.
