Title
KENT-40A632. Early Medieval gilt-copper alloy buckle plate. Drawn by Dominic Andrews.
Description
English: An early medieval sub-triangular copper alloy buckle plate. The plate is cast in one piece and is hollow-backed, with a dome-headed copper alloy rivet present at each corner. The upper surfaces of the plate are heavily gilded, although patches of the gilding are missing. There is a triangular zone of high relief in the centre of the plate, and this is surrounded by a series of small circular indents, probably punched, around its outer edge. The un-gilded surfaces of the buckle exhibit a mixture of both a light green and reddish-pink patina. L. 20.38mm, W. 28.72mm, T. 5.39mm, weight 7.4g.

This buckle plate is of Marzinzik's Type II.13 (kite-shaped plate) and dates to the fifth or sixth centuries.
