Description |
English: A Medieval cast copper alloy lace tag or chape c.1300-1700AD. The chape is formed of a sheet of copper folded into a tube and tapering to a point; there is a straight seam along the side The chape has moulded decoration at the wide end with turret shaped edging then a line of three rivet holes; followed by a dividing line; followed by a turret-like geometric strip design; followed by a dividing line; followed by a strip of sword-like design with trifloral grip/pommel and a series of dots forming the blade; following by a dividing line; followed by another geometric strip with turrets on an angle; followed by a dividing line; followed by a final strip of geometric diamond-like design tapering to the end, with a line of dots between the diamonds. There are signs of gilding present surrounding the moulded designs.
The tag is 44.5mm long and weighs 1.15 grams. Similar wide end can be seen in S.Margeson, 1993, p.23 no.124 (Norwich households: the Medieval and Post-Medieval finds from Norwich Survey excavations 1971-1978. Norwich: East Anglian Archaeology). |
