Title
KENT-918A91: Early Medieval brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy Early Medieval ansate brooch. The brooch has an arched back with an equally size rounded terminal on either end with a notched ridge at the extreme end. The arched back of the brooch is decorated with three ridges; one each at the break of slope up to the arch and one in the center. The central ridge has four transverse notches across it. Below the terminals there is a pierced single lug which would have held the now missing pin. There is evidence of the catch plate on the other side but this is now broken away. The brooch is 39.1mm long, 8.3mm wide, 3.4mm wide and weighs 8.28 grams.

Ansate brooches are Frankish in origin and are found on the Continent from the 7th century onwards, but they are not used in England until the 8th century. They were probably in use until the 10th century. A very similar example can be seen in Hattat, p380 ref 1686.

Two very similar examples have been found in the same feild, KENT-C5C836 and KENT-C633E0.
