Kent-0108BE. Early Medieval coin. Sceatta. Obverse view.
Description
English: A complete, Early Medieval, struck or hammered, silver sceatta coin. Primary Phase, Series B1F. Obverse: Drapery head right in serpent circle. An annulet below chin. Inscription: VAN(TAVMA). Reverse: Bird (dove) on cross within serpent circle, two annulets in the field and two pellets, three annulets below in legend. Inscription: HA[]II?. Mint name: London. Die axis: 7 o'clock. Very fine condition with little wear, silver but grey tarnish over most of the surface and a small bright shiny silver patch at 9 o'clock on the reverse where it had been recently damaged by agricultural machinery. This is likely to date to the late C7th - early C8th. Ref. Coins of England and the UK, Spink 2014, page 85 No. 777 and Sceattas an illustrated guide, Anglo-Saxon coins and icons, Tony Abramson, Heritage Marketing & Publications 2006, page 6 & 7, page 49 - series B1F & page 60. the coin is 13.74mm long, 13.04mm wide, 1.53mm thick, diameter 13.74mm and weighs 1.3g.
