Title |
knife handle showing back of figure |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy knife handle with moulded ornamentation in the form of a rounded knop at one end and carinated sections above and below a figure wrapped around a staff like a snake. The figure has two oval eyes and a button nose and moulded lines on the top and back of the head to denote hair. There are also moulded lines in front of the knee that may represent clothing, possibly a skirt. The base of the handle has part of the recantgular tang remaining which would have slotted into the corresponding opening in the organic haft or implement. The style of the piece with a snake-like figure suggests that it might be ethnographic, but it can be compared to other figurative knife handles that are British. Read (1988) illustrates a knife haft in the form of a female figure on page 156, No.1048, which is dated to the 17th century and another in the form of a horse which has the same integral rectangular tang on page 124, No.790, which is also dated to the 17th century. |
