Title
LANCUM-997A14: Incomplete medieval purse bar/purse frame
Description
English: Cast cu-alloy purse frame of type A2, dating to the late 15th - early 16th Century. This purse bar is made of copper-alloy, this particular type of bar is characterised by the use of inlaid niello which is now missing. Unlike other bars it does not depict animal heads on its terminals. The purse bar consists of the main bar, the central block and the two attachment plates. The loop, the shank and the rove are all missing, as are half of one arm and the terminal end. Instead the bar terminates at one end with a worn break and on the other end there is a small knop at end of the bar. The central block is a characteristic globular shaped block, which has a hole running through it from top to bottom. The two arms of the bar have both been decorated with an engraved, double cross-hatching design, which would have been inlaid with niello. Suspended below this decoration is the two attachment plates, one of which is missing now. The fact that the remaining attachment plate only has two rivet holes allows this piece to be identified as a Type A2. The central block is also decorated with inlaid niello, in the shape of a 'W' and a cross or 'X' (one on either side of the block). This niello is also missing. The block forms the central part of the bar; either side of the block (around the bar) there is a simple decorative feature.
