Title
LANCUM-D6C883: Early Roman fragment of a Samian ware vessel
Description
English: Large fragment of a Samian ware vessel dating from the Roman period. Decorated wall sherd. The outside surface is extremely abraded, but one can just make out horizontal and vertical borders, an arch and draped figure (possibly a dacing girl) standing to the left on the vertical line/border. The originally dark red slip is very worn/abraded and has turned black/greyish espeically on the inside which probably indicates that the vessel was burned. The breaks look worn, but not burned which would indicate that the vessel broke after burning and either during deposition or just before recovery (cliff fall). The style of decoration suggests a late Hadrianic/early Antonine date and an origin in the Lezoux area of Central Gaul.
