LANCUM-D701F3: Early Roman fragment of a Samian ware vessel |
||
Description |
English: Large body/bottom fragment of a Samian ware vessel dating from the Roman period. Decorated body sherd with over half of the flattened pedestal foot ring still remaining. Dragendorff Form 37. The originally dark red slipped is very worn/abraded and has turned black/greyish in places, looking charred, which probably indicates that the vessel was burned. The breaks look worn, but not burned which would indicate that the vessel broke after burning and either during deposition or just before recovery (cliff fall). The decorated is similar to that of LANCUM-D6C883 and the two sherds may come from the same vessel, although this sherd is in much better condition than the other one. The decoration consists of a row of arches, held up by small female figures. A dancing female is placed under one arch, while the other shows a naked male winged figure. |
