Title |
LANCUM-D7DA45: Medieval purse frame fragment |
||
Description |
English: Cast cu-alloy fragment of purse bar dating from the 15th centurty. Only the central block remains with a short, broken arm on either side. The central block was perforated vertically to receive a swivelling loop for suspension of the purse from a belt or chateleine. The arms probably extended twice the current length and would have had small loops at the bottom to which the purse body (made from fabric) would have been attached. Traces incised decoration on the block and the arms remain (it may have been bettering), but it is illegible now. Many purse frames reading 'AVE MARIA GRACIA PLENA' are known and it is possible that this fragment would have carried the same words. They have been inlaid with niello, but again, there are no traces left. |
