Very early in the morning did he arise,and with a heart beating with joy did he depart for L , with his baskets slung across his back. Itwas well for Jem that he was soonovertaken by Thomas Lister thefarmer, with his cart; for it wouldnot have been possible that he could have got to L on his crutches, with all his baskets at hisback. Why, Jemmy, art going totown, lad? (( Ay, Sir, said Jemmy. ^Why, bless thee, lad! thoultnever do that on thy wooden stumps,I reckon? Come, get up into thcart. Jem was very glad to be 12 LAME JEMMY. •Jftr^,

Howsomever, added he,good-naturedly, theres many foolsin th world, they say; so I hopethoult find one. Jemmy: and, anyway, Ill give thee a lift home in thcart, and thy wiskets too, if theellcome to the Red Lion at fiveoclock.
