Yes, Sir, answered Jem. Iam fit for nothing else, added he,looking at his feet. Alas, my poor child! said theclergyman; but it is the will ofGod. He then enquired who hadtaught him to make baskets. Nobody, Sir; I have been tryingfor a month. Sir, every day. These LAME JEMMY. 17 are my first, and they are not verygood; but I hope I shall do betterby and by. ^^ No doubt you will, if you takepains, my boy, replied the clergy-man. ^^What do you ask apiecefor your baskets? O, Sir, said Jem, ^ I do notask any price: anything you please.Sir. So the clergyman said that hewould take five of them; and heput a halfcrowii into Jemmys hand.*^ There is sixpence apiece for them;and you must take them to thegreat house up the passage there,and ring at the bell, and ask for 18 LAME JEMMY.

Master Frank, and say that I sentthe five baskets for his five sisters.The clergman then asked Jem hisname, and where he lived, and setit down in a little book which hetook from his pocket. He thenbade him good-morning, and wassoon out of sight. LAME JEMMY. 19 Jem looked at his halfcrown withgreat delight; and, having put it inhis pocket, he put the baskets oneinto another, and carried them to thedoor of the great house up the flag-ged passage. He rang at the greatbell, and a smart footman openedthe door. He seemed in a greathurry, and said, O! we dontwant any of them sort of things;when Jemmy shouted out, just asthe man was shutting the door, Iwant Master Frank, Sir! ^^O, thats a different thing!
