He said nothing; but, ri-sing up from the bench on whichhe was seated, he took his crutchesand hobbled out of the cottage. LAME JEMMY. 7 He was lame of both his feet, andcould only walk with two crutches.He crossed the road, and w^entthrough the great meadow, and satdown beside the stream which ranat the bottom of it. Here he w^eptin silence; for the blow his motherhad given him, even more than hersevere w^ords, had almost broken hisheart. At length he exclaimed, ^ Icannot be a carter, nor a ploughman,nor a bricklayer, nor a sawyer, nora blacksmith, nor a joiner, I amso very lame! I wish it had pleasedGod to make we whole, like otherboys!
