Title |
Late Early Medieval Buckle |
||
Description |
English: A Late Saxon copper alloy D-shaped buckle frame, worn, bent and corroded, the face covered with ring-and-dot, with the remains of three lobes at the sub-triangular outside edge, between two larger lobes and one at each end of the narrowed bar. The pin is missing. It measures 23 x 27mm. The shape of the frame suggests the influence of the Ringerike style. Similar examples are known from various places in Norfolk, Corpusty (HER 33442 and 33872), Little Dunham (HER 30277), Fring (HER 23001), Grimston (HER 30243), Horsham St Faith (HER 8126), Narborough (HER 34961), East Rudham (HER 41004), West Rudham (HER 28131), Scarning (HER 36096), Snettisham (HER 29871 and 38194), East Walton (HER 30041) and Whissonsett (HER 31800). One example from Hindringham (HER 25659) retains a sheet plate. One from Norwich (HER 156) has been published (Norwich Households no.128). Larger examples have been found in Barton Bendish (HER 18852) and West Walton (HER 18947). It dates from the 11th century. |
