Title
Late Roman to early Early-medieval buckle
Description
English: A copper-alloy buckle of late Roman to early Early-medieval date. This piece is a typical example of the so-called 'Soldiers and settlers' material of the late 4th to early 5th centuries AD. It is classified by Hawkes and Dunning as a type IIC buckle (see S.C. Hawkes and C.G. Dunning; 1961; pp. 56-58), the decoration being derived from the slightly earlier type IIB buckle, which has more obviously zoomorphic designs. The object is almost complete and is a good example of its type. The frame and two hinge bars have been cast in one piece and the pin added afterwards. The frame is D-shaped and retains one of an original two internal curved end projections. A vertical groove separates the frame from the first hinge bar, at the centre of which is a short recessed axis bar. The pin is wrapped around this axis bar and is tongue-shaped with four vertical grooves at its wider end. The aforementioned hinge bar has a flat upper surface, as does the other parallel hinge bar, around which the leather strap would have been looped. The two hinge bars are separated by two crescentic lengths, which take the form of crudely-depicted serpents, with four heads, one at the top and bottom of each hinge bar. The eye of each serpent head is depicted by a single punched ring-and-dot mark, whilst two parallel horizontal grooves form the nose and mouth. The body of each serpent is marked by a line of punched dots; a combination of dots and ring-and-dots also decorates the frame and the remainder of the adjacent hinge bar. The reverse of the buckle is flat and plain. The piece measures 35.1mm long, 35mm wide and 4.5mm thick. The weight is 10.06g.
