Title |
Late Saxon buckle plate |
||
Description |
English: Late Saxon buckle plate with incomplete two-loop hinge pivot at the outside edge. The central part is of D-section and is decorated in high relief with a pair of confronting animal heads. These have dotted nostrils, lentoid eyes and huge ears with blind-drilled centres, but lack any suggestion of lower jaws. The attachment end is decorated with grooves on the gently sloping front face, but flat and rebated behind a transverse ridge on the underside. The strap would have been secured by a single rivet, which to judge from staining on the front, was of iron.
The buckle frame would have pivoted on a separate bar hinged with the plate and would probably have been heart-shaped (cf. an example from Norwich HER 373N and one from Appleby, Humberside PAS SWYOR-AC86A7). For a discussion of such buckle and related strap-ends see H. Geake in EAA 120 (2007), 199. Late 9th century. |
