Title
Late early-medieval buckle frame and integral plate
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy single-looped buckle with integral plate of probable late early-medieval date (c. 11th century AD). This is an incomplete example in so far as it is missing its pin, which was made of iron judging by the orange corrosion product retained in the perforation. The frame is oval with a prominently protruding triangular lip on its outer edge. On its upper surface it is bevelled externally with mirroring internal bevelling on its lower surface extending into the lip. Around the pin perforation there is a moulding either side on the upper surface in the transverse plane. Beyond this the plate incurves to a waist 8.7mm in width. The rest of the plate is broadly square and is recessed on the lower surface to take the strap. This makes the plate very thin (c. 1.4mm), such that it has bent upwards at one corner as a result of old damage. At this attachment end there are two rivet holes, one in each corner; both rivets have been lost. The buckle has corroded to a mid-red/brown colour with areas of mid-light green corrosion product. Such a colour, together with former the iron pin, suggest the date offered above.
