Title |
Lead alloy zoomorphic brooch or badge |
||
Description |
English: Cast lead-alloy badge, prooch or decorative pin.
The badge is incomplete though would likely have taken a sub-circular form. There is a roughly cylindrical circle that forms the outer border, inside which, and attached to the border with thin stems of lead-alloy, is the figure of an animal, likely a snake. The body of the snake curves to form the outer circular border, and though some of the badge is missing, it appears that the border curves back into the centre and becomes the snake's tail, where it terminates in the snake's mouth. Two thin strips of lead hold the snake's head and body in place, and the remains of a third are present in the broken knop on the snake's body directly below the head. Suggested date, medieval, c. 1200 - 1500 AD. Dimensions: weight: 9.43g, width: 31.2mm, height: 25.6mm, thickness: 6.1mm |
