Lead medal or token - obverse |
||
Description |
English: A nineteenth-century circular pewter medal issued by the Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners Royal Benevolent Society. The edges of the medal are damaged, but on the obverse can be seen a bust of Nelson facing left. His hair is long and he is wearing a jacket and possibly a sash of medals. To the left of the portrait are the letters 'No'; the 'o' is underlined. Around the circumference of the object, reading from left to right, is the legend 'ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY'. These were the words which Nelson used as a signal to his fleet at the beginning of the battle of Trafalgar. The reverse is damaged, but shows part of the mast and sails of a wooden sailing ship in a heavy sea being driven onto rocks. There is a legend around the circumference of the object which is hard to read; from parallels it is known that it should say SHIPWRECKED MARINERS SOCIETY. The medal was used as a membership badge of the society; type as British Historical Medals, vol. II, no. 2575. |
