Onthe 26th Jackson struck eastwards, marched across Popeslines of communication, and at midnight reached Manassas.On the 27th of August Jackson remained stationary at Man-assas, drawing in that direction Popes columns now retiringfrom the Rappahannock. That night he slipped away, andby noon of the 28th, circling to the north and west, wasstrongly placed on Bull Run, near the road that runs fromThoroughfare Gap through Gainesville to Ccntrcville.Along that road Lee was marching with the remainder ofthe Confederate army. Lee had been in constant receipt of news from Jackson,and appears to have kept in relatively close touch with thecomplicated conditions arising from that generals remark-able movements. During the 25th he remained in positionopposite Pope along the Rappahannock, but on the follow-ing morning started the army on the route which Jacksonhad previously taken. On the 29th the march was continued onGainesville, which Pope had neglected to hold, just as he hadfailed to hold Thoroughfare Gap. Near Gainesville Stuartscavalry was met, and the column was hurried towards Grove-ton, where Jacksons guns could now be plainly - heard.That general had been heavily engaged in the afternoon ofthe 28th, and now Pope was concentrating his whole forceto overwhelm him. Lee had arrived in the very nick oftime. The Confederate army was at this time divided into twocommands or corps, and the larger half was under the ordersof Longstreet. This general, although he handled his troopswith great tactical skill and courage, was usually slow inelaborating his dispositions for battle. Lee was anxious, ashis troops formed up in the woods on Jacksons right, thatan attack should be made on Popes left at the earliestpossible moment. He reconnoitred the
