rd quelques longsvoyages dans les mers dAfrique et de lInde. En 1779,il sembarqua pour New-York, sur un vaisseau dont il avaitle commandement. A la hauteur du banc de Terre-Neuve.ce vaisseau fut pris par une frégate anglaise et Quesnel futconduit à Halifax. De là, il vint à Québec. Protégé parHaldimand, qui avait connu sa famille en France, il songeabientôt à sétablir au Canada. Il se fit naturaliser etépousa à Montréal (Acte de mariage, Grefife de Montréal^le 10 avril 1780, Marie Josephte Deslandes, fille de Pierreet de Marie Josephte Le Pelle de la Haye. Vers 1781, ilfit un voyage dans la vallée du Mississipi, puis fixa sarésidence à Boucherville. Il y pratiqua paisiblement lenégoce de marchand de village, et quand la clientèle déser-tait son comptoir et le laissait seul avec ses ballots de mar-chandises, le poète consolait le marchand en faisant desvers. LE SHERIF QUESNEL ET MME QUESNEL LES BOIS-FRANCS 281 et que J.-D. Mermet et lui furent les maîtres incontestés dela poésie canadienne au dix-neuvième siècle. Joseph Ques-nel, première souche de la famille Quesnel au Canada, dé-céda à Montréal le 4 juillet 1809. Des treize enfants quivinrent égayer son foyer, la plupart moururent en bas âge.Timoléon, baptisé à Boucherville le 4 mars 1799 et pèrede Joseph Auguste, fut Tavant-dernier de cette nombreusefamille. Il fut reçu médecin vers 1822, se fixa à Sainte-Marguerite de Blairfindie, nommée aussi LAcadie et de-venue aujourdhui St-Jean dIberville, et épousa à Saint-Philippe, en premières noces, le 22 octobre 1823, FlavieSinger, fille de Frédéric Singer, ancien voyageur des paysden haut, et de Catherine Laman.
