Il acheta une maison de François Gaudet, où il ouvritle premier magasin dans la paroisse de Saint-Christophe.Cette maison était sur le côté sud du chemin provincial,sur le 5ième lot du 4ième rang, cadastre numéro 214 ducanton dArthabaska. Bientôt, il bâtit une perlasserie près de son magasin.Cétait à lépoque où la potasse et la perlasse étaient deuxarticles de commerce bien en vogue dans les Bois-Francs. Il ouvrit de même un magasin et une perlasserie àSaint-Paul de Chester. Il soccupa du commerce du bois pour la CompagnieHall. Adolphus Stein avait aussi une magnifique fermedans le village de Saint-Christophe. Nous voyons dansles archives municipales que Adolphus Stein était, en 1852,conseiller pour la division numéro deux du comté deDrummond. Le village dArthabaska ville fut érigé en 1853. De 1855 à 1858 et de 1864 à 1870 Adolphus Steinfut maire du village dArthabaska et Préfet du ComtédArthabaska.

LEONCE STEIN.—ADOLPHUS STEIN ET GENEVIEVEMARGUERITE BUTEAU LES BOIS-FRANCS 273 En 1854 le gouvernement ouvrit un bureau de posteà Saint-Christophe. Adolphus Stein en fut le premiertitulaire. Le commerce étant très lucratif, Adolphus Stein sevât bientôt en possession dune fortune assez considérable.^Cest alors quil songea à loger sa famille plus convena-blement. Il choisit pour le site de sa future résidence le versantdes Alleghanys, à deux arpents et demi du chemin pro-vincial et à un arpent et demi du cordon qui sépare letroisième rang du quatrième rang du canton dArthabaska.Cest en sa mémoire que la côte qui se trouve à lentrée dususdit cordon a été appelée, et on lappelle encore La Côteà Stein . Nous voyons encore sur le quatrième lot du troisièmerang, numéro du cadastre 79, les vestiges de la résidencede Adolphus Stein. Elle fut incendiée vers 1874.
