It is with Much regret I have just learned that one of our Citizens J.S. Lightner[James S. Lightner] has been punished by your forces with death I am a member of the Mo S.G.[Missouri State Guard] and have participated in these acts; I am still a member of that body I have also the honor of Commanding the forces of Said body (Mo St G) in this County I have thirteen (13) Union men prisoners

I desire to treat them as prisoners of war and to extend to them all the privileges that we can consistently but, if our men when captured are to be Shot, hung, or otherwise deprived of life, I shall cause my prisoners to be death with[?] accordingly I hope Sir, tho’ I differ with you and as I am really a Rebel, accordin to Northern version, that you will communicate with

me to that extent Please information me if Lightner[James M. Lightner] has been punished by death So that my Course may hereafter be marked — All on me to say Sir, that when you arrived in this Country, I was absent (in the army) but, what I heard of you, I had every evidence that our friends would be dealt with kindly when in your power Thus far, excepting the report of Lightner’s[James M. Lightner] death, I have no

right to form another opinion on your arrival in the little village (Waverly) which by fortune is my lot to reside, my family state to me, that they were kindly treated by your command allow me Sir, to say it is a debt I cannot Soon forget; And should it (tho’ differing as we do ever be my lot) nothing will afford me more pleasure than to reciprocate Same —
