The railway platform in the left distance, first known as Henderson's, was opened for use on 26 Sept 1874. Crossing loops were added in 1881-2 and a large sand bin and water tanks followed in 1884. The Linden yard was remodelled in the 1896 deviation, which eliminated four eight chain curves between Numantia and Linden by substituting three transitioned curves of twelve chains radius. Advantage was also taken at that time to provide full interlocking passing loops and sidings, operating from an open frame on the platform. When the line was duplicated in 1902, the island platform with brick buildings and footbridge from the cutting was built.

Under the embankment is the site of the original 17 Mile Hollow Toll Bar erected 1849, to collect tolls on the Western Road. The first toll keeper was Thomas Ellison who built the associated Toll Bar Inn in 1857. When both were demolished for railway construction in 1863, Thomas received compensation of £1,633 for the loss; he also owned The Native Lass Inn on Lapstone Hill. His son John married Hannah Lees in Springwood in 1871 and they had 10 children. His orchard and farm were situated on the present Springwood golf course and the house utilised stone salvaged from the Toll Bar Inn. In 1911 the family relocated to their property in Emu Plains. Ellison road and public school in Springwood bear his name.

In the distance, right, is Linden Lodge, built on the original grant of the land made to William Henderson, a prosperous Sydney ware-houseman, in 1865; it comprised 40 acres (16 hectares), portion 7 in the parish of Linden. Henderson built a fine home which he named Linden Lodge and was living there by 1876, when he was one of a group of residents instrumental in having a public school opened in Springwood. Following the application of one of his neighbours, Mr D Fletcher, a railway platform was conveniently built nearby, originally known as Henderson’s Platform and then as Linden, after the house.
