Text Appearing Before Image:
he city itself possesses one of the finest water-powers in the world. It is on the line of the New York Cen-tral railroad—a line that with its connections, spans the wholecountry. Its people were industrious and in comfortable cir-cumstances; not so rich as to be indifferent to the claims ofhumanity, and not so poor as to be unable to help any goodcause which commanded the approval of their judgment. The ground had been measurably prepared for me by thelabors of others—notably by Hon. Myron Holley, whose monu-ment of enduring- marble now stands in the beautiful cemeteryat Mount Hope, upon an eminence befitting his noble charac-ter. I know of no place in the Union where I could havelocated at the time with less resistance, or received a largermeasure of sympathy and cooperation, and I now look back tomy life and labors there with unalloyed satisfaction, andhaving spent a quarter of a century among its people, I shallalways feel more at home there than any where else in thiscountry.

Portrait of John Browx. CHAPTER VIII. JOHN BROWN AND MRS. STOWE. My First Meeting with Capt. John Brown—The Free Soil Movement—Col-ored Convention—Uncle Toms Cabin—Industrial School for ColoredPeople—Letter to Mrs. H. B. Stowe. ABOUT the time I began my enterprise in Rochester Ichanced to spend a night and a day under the roof of aman whose character and conversation, and whose objects andaims in life made a very deep impression upon my mind andheart. His name had been mentioned to me by several promi-nent colored men, among whom were the Rev. Henry High-land Garnet and J. W. Loguen. In speaking of him theirvoices would drop to a whisper, and what they said of himmade me very eager to see and know him. Fortunately I wasinvited to see him in his own house. At the time to which Inow refer this man was a respectable merchant in a populousand thriving city, and our first place of meeting was at hisstore. This was a substantial brick building, on a prominent, busy street. A glance
