The newspapers at-tacked the measure with great vivacity, and the chancellor of the exchequerwas obliged to abandon his proposition. This concluded the legislation of the year, andon the 21st of August Parliament was adjourned. William E. Gladstone was always a busy man. His appearance in publicwas almost continuous.
