Murdoch, who had interested andinspired the Union troops in many a camp by his patriotic recitations, ThomasBuchanan Read, poet and artist, commemorated this event in a stirring poem,entitled Sheridans Ride. There were many men, unknown at the breakingout of the war, who gained honor and fame in the Virginia campaigns. Toname them all would take up many a page of this book. Among them was 181 182 ABRAHAM LINCOLN. Joseph Warren Keifer, of Springfiekl, Ohio, afterward speaker of the nationalHouse of Representatives.
