Dos Prazeres, or the Pleasures, is the singular name ofthe Portuguese cemetery for this western side of Lisbon,and for a time I was at a loss to understand its derivation.Then I discovered that a small hermitage once stood onthis same site dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres,the ground around being called Campo dos Prazeres.Many are the broad, silent avenues, all numbered asstreets, in this Pere la Chaise of Lisbon, lined with loftycypress trees that watch over the countless rows of smallchapels, repositaries of the cofhns, for the Portugueseare reluctant to bury them out of sight. Flowers andsmall altars gleam in the shadowy interiors through the irongrilles of the gates. It is an elevated site from which an-other splendid panorama spreads out to view with thecity below, the river in the middle distance, and forbackground a limitless sea. THE ESTRELLA GARDENS. The Largo da Estrella commanding cupola of the Basilica of the Sacred Heartof Jesus (SS. Coragao de Jesus), commonly known as theEstrella. D. Maria I, the unfortunate Queen whose vainefforts to unite her intense religious views with thepolitics of her reign ended in partial dementia, erected thischurch in fulfilment of a vow made before the birth ofher eldest son, the long-desired heir to the throne. Theroyal consort, D. Pedro III, laid the first stone in 1779;the building was not completed until 1796. Money wasexpended on it that is said to have been destined by theex-minister, Marquis de Pombal for making a monu-mental bridge spanning the Tagus between Lisbon andAlmada, a project that several clever engineers have againput seriously forward during the last twenty years. Theinterior is rich in marbles, and the sculptured figures onthe facade display, as usual, the skill of the Portuguesestone chiseller, in this instance the well-known Machadode Castro. Connoisse
