Title
Lithic : Palaeolithic
Description
English: A complete flint biface handaxe of lower to upper Palaeolithic date (500,000-40,000, BC). The lithic is sub-triangular in profile with different angles on each of the tapering distal edges. The upper surface is convex and retains a minor amount of cortex at the proximal end and there are large negative scars of varying depths across the remaining surface. The tapered distal end, and both the left and right hand edges contain semi-abrupt retouch with small chipping surrounding most areas of retouch. The proximal edge contains some abrupt retouch and large negative scars which creates the tapered curving of the bulbous proximal end. The lower surface is convex due to the tapered bulbous proximal end. There is a minor amount of cortex retained along the proximal left hand edge. The remaining lower surface has invasive stepped flaking.

The flint is an orangey brown due to extensive patination across the surface. The cortex is a light brown in colour.

This lithic was recovered from a gravel pit from which several other chert implements including a large Levallois flake. The deposit from which the object was recovered is situated on a terrace of the Axe Valley gravels.
