Title
Lithic implement
Description
English: A fragment of a flint blade, which has been knapped from a larger core. The ventral surface is uneven, suggesting flaws in the flint at the broken end. The undulation of this side also suggest that it was close to the bulb of percussion. The complete end of the blade retains some of the original cortex of the raw nodule (about 5%), although the dorsal surface shows that at least two layers of flakes had been removed from the core beforehand, and it has three longitudinal facets, as well as some trimming around the end. The broken end (a horizontal break across the blade) is unusually flat and has a coarse texture, suggesting that at some point it has been ground down. The fact that the whole of the piece, including the unnaturally flat end has a white patina, shows that the whole of the piece has been in the same condition for a long time, suggesting that the possible grinding of the flint occurred in antiquity. It is thus likely that this grinding was done against another piece of stone, rather than by a modern metal tool. This blade is likely to date from the Upper Palaeolithic (c. 10,000 BC).
