can she have anice quiet sing, except when people are safely in bed, and wagonsare still? What chance would she have of a peaceful time, if sheshould start it in the day time? I could give you a long string of names, of great and famousmen who have been very fond of Pussy. There was Mahomet whowas so fond of his cat Muezza, that once when she was sleeping onhis sleeve, and he wished to get up, he cut off the sleeve ratherthan disturb her. When the animal is in good humor, and seesnothing to be afraid of, the quills lie fiat down, and he does not lookso very fierce. But let him take fright, and they all fly P in aninstant, and he is ready to defend himself. It must be convenientto have ones weapons so handy. If danger comes near, he turnshis back to the enemy, and charges at it backwards, or else stickshis head between his feet and grunts. If it is night—and it 44
