enter in this fieldbeing, to judge from results, to make theold bolster go by means of filling piecesbetween the upper and lower plates. Howwell they have succeeded is best knownto those who have failed. The difficulties of having any desiredsection for a given load are surmountedby the use of a casting of steel. How thematerial is disposed is clearly shown inthe three sectional views, in which a box at the side bearings was less than 1-64inch, and with 50,300 pounds on the bol-ster there was no deflection whatever atthe side bearings. To get these figures, it was necessary tomake the machined fit between the shoul-ders of the tension member and also ofthe pins which were turned and driveninto reamed holes: the pins being also ofsteel, is and i% inches, respectively, atthe center and ends of the tension mem-ber. The design of this bolster wasworked out by Chief Draftsman Posson,in the office of M«chanical EngineerThompson, of the Northern Pacific Rail-way. 830 LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING.

Fig. 3, the eleva-tion of the first-class car, is somuch of an American in appear-ance, that if put in one of ourtrains, it would not be easy to tellthat it was built in England, andthe illusion would still hold if weshould pass into the car and seeit as shown in the plan, Fig. 4, inwhich is seen the buffet and smok-ing compartment, the saloon orlounging room, the hot waterheater and the lavatory.
