Thephotograph shown represents the Queen& Crescent Limited with five cars run-ning up a 52-foot grade at a speed of 61miles per hour, as indicated by the speedrecorder on the engine. It will be noted all driven off as gas by the heat of thefurnace, in a few seconds after the coalenters the firebox. Hydrocarbons, when unconsumed, makeobjectionable black smoke, but when a suf-ficient quantity of air is mixed with thehydrocarbons combustion is complete andno smoke appears. Passenger locomotives have been pro-vided with hollow fire-brick arches anddeflecting air tubes to deflect the gasesand to supply the necessary air to mai^eperfect combustion. Rules. After firing each shovelful of coal thedoor must be left open one or two inchesfor a few seconds, admitting enough airto produce complete combustion of thegases driven off from the coal.
