Description
English: Ruins of the cathedral, Arras, France, during World War I. Part of the ruins of Arras cathedral, with a mass of rubble and the broken windows of a shop or cafe in the foreground. The cathedral had been built in the eighteenth century in the classical style as can be seen by some of the pillars and arches in this shot.

For most of the war, Arras was near the Front and was as a result fairly badly damaged. For a short period at the beginning of the war, the line between French and German troops actually ran through the town itself.
