re French Huguenots seeking safety and reli-gious liberty after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Thefather of Patrick Marion was born in France about 1730, andemigrated to Ireland some time prior to 1757. Disturbed by frequent invasions the Irish people had beenunable to acquire skill in the manufacture of their wool and flax.About the time of the Huguenot troubles in France there wasmore quiet in Ireland, and those in authority in the latter coun-try offered great inducement to the French immigrants. Thoseamong the French who were capable were paid by the Govern-ment to instruct the Irish in manufacturing. So, while Frenchimmigrants were coming to America, many others were landingon the Northern coast of Ireland. Among the Huguenots whocame to America in the seventeenth century were BenjaminMarion and Louise dAubrev, his wife. Thev settled in South V / C/ Carolina. A grandson of this Benjamin and a son of GabrielMarion was Francis Marion, the Revolutionary hero mentionedbefore.
