English: Rocky, the service dog, for Staff Sgt. Matthew Benack with Wounded Warrior Battalion East sits on the sidelines of the archery range Feb. 16 during the 2012 Marine Corps trials. Benack, a Light Armored Vehicle Crewman, who served with 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion and 2nd LAR Bn. requested Rocky as a service dog more than two years ago to assist in various everyday needs due to a traumatic brain injury and the post-traumatic stress disorder he was diagnosed with following a deployment to Afghanistan. The Marine Corps Trials is a Wounded Warrior Regiment hosted event in which approximately 300 wounded, ill and injured Marines compete for a spot on the 50-athlete, All-Marine team roster. The selected athletes will go on to compete in the Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, April 30 – May 6. The Games are a competition between all branches of service for wounded, ill and injured service members. Benack is a St. Louis native. |
