nes andslightly Chinese eyes. Her costume was of coursethe perfection of highland full dress, and, thoughsingular, by no means unbecoming. The headdresswas the most striking part of it, consisting of bluecloth, wound round and round in a sort of turban, soas to form an inverted cone, towering at leasteighteen inches above her head. Her upper garmentwas a sleeveless black velvet jacket, ornamented witha row of large embossed silver buttons runninground the neck and continued down the front;besides these, circular plates of chased and enamelledsilver, three inches in diameter, arranged in rowsdown the front and back seams and around the skirt,made the garment almost resemble a cuirass. Thedress was completed by a single kilt-like petticoat,composed of a dark blue cotton cloth, with a broadred woollen border, wound round the hips, and reach-ing a little below the knee. One end was tastefullyworked with deep silken embroidery, and carefullydisposed, so as to hang gracefully on one side. A

Her rank was marked by two large silverhoops round her neck, and a necklace of shortcylinders of some red clayey material, intermixed withamber and ivory beads. These cumbrous ornamentsare permitted only to the wives and daughters oftsawbwas and pawmines. Two silver bracelets oneach arm, and long silver tubes worn in the lobesof the ears, completed her splendour. Her littledaughters, besides the distinctive girdles of blackbeads, and silver bells, each containing a small freepellet, which tinkled pleasantly to every motionof the wearer, wore broad waist-belts ornamentedwith several rows of cowrie shells.
