Copyrighted by Peter Henderson & Co., 1891. TURNIP. German, Steckrube.—French, Navet.—Spanish, Nabo Coman. 1 oz.for 150 feet of drill; 1 to 2 lbs. in drills for an acre. Turnips do best in highly enriched, light, sandy or gravelly soils. Commence sowing the earliest varieties in April in drills from twelve to fifteen inches apart, andthin out early to six or nine inches in the rows. For a succession sow at intervals of a fortnight until the last week in July, from which time until the end of AugustBowings may he made for the fall and main crop. Turnips may be preserved until spring by cutting off the tops about one inch from the bulb, and storing in a cellar orcool shed during winter, covering the roots with dry sand; they should be harvested before severe frost sets in, for, though comparatively hardy, few of the varieties willsurvive the winters of the Northern States in the open ground. If by mail in quantities of y2 ^°- and upward, postage must be added at the rate of 8c.
