The compiler of the Manual, on this occasion, thinks it not improper to callattention to the contirmation afforded by this ancient memorial of the accuracyof the maps heretofore made by himself,without o*her guide than that affordedby the ancient manuscript records, and by old deeds, in which, in most in-stances, no names of streets were indicated, and which requiied an examina-tion through half a century of obscuie records, to locate a single grant of a lot.His map of original grants of town lots to the first settlers, published in theManual of 1857, is, he is more than ever convinced, correct in measurementsand localities. It is generally known, to those familiar with the early history of the city,that a regular survey was made shortly after the organization of the municipalgovernment of New Amsterdam, in 1653, by Jaques Cortelyou, the professionalsurveyor of that day. The object of that survey, which was executed by au-thority of the city Burgomasters, was to establish greater regularity in the linesof the highways, than had before been observed.
