More than 1800 years ago therewere two very beautiful cities just at the base of Mount Vesuvius.They were just here at the foot, one where I put this blue paperstar (P), the other where I put my finger. Mabel may put thered star there (H). One bright day the people in these cities were working away.The soldiers were on guard at the gates; the baker was bakingbread; the miller was grinding wheat; the tailor makingclothes ; and some of the ladies were combing their hair withqueer little combs of bone, and looking into little hand-mirrorsof polished steel. Suddenly Vesuvius sent out streams of lavaand clouds of ashes, and the two cities were buried out of sight.(The modeled Vesuvius may be ignited now.)
