Description
English: Rct. Ely Canseco, Platoon 4001, strikes a winning blow on Rct. Jordan Matsu, Platoon 4000, during a pugil stick match Oct. 30, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits battle with pugil sticks in two 15-second matches to simulate fighting with bayonet-affixed rifles. This training, along with other close-quarters combat skills, is part of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, which contributes to the mental, character and physical development of recruits and Marines. Canseco, a 20-year-old Los Angeles native, and Matsu, a 19-year-old native of Plainview, Texas, are scheduled to graduate Jan. 10, 2014, with Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion.Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
