Text Appearing Before Image:
nd Drumsheugh became insistent. Am no wantin tae tribble ye, Docter, but ave never got ower that sermon on theturtle, Docter. Ye micht lets hear itagain. Am no sure gin the dominie everherd it. May Drumsheugh be forgiven! Whereupon Domsie went on the backtrail, and affected to search his memoryfor the traces of the turtle, with no satis-faction. May he also be forgiven! Toots, Drumsheugh, you are trying todraw my leg. I know you well, eh ? Asfor you, Dominie, youve heard the storytwenty times. Well, well, just to pleaseyou; but mind you, this is the last time. It was the beginning of a sermon thatold MacFee, of Glenogie, used to preachon the Monday after the sacrament, fromthe text, * The voice of the turtle is heardin the land, and this was the introduction: There will be many wonders in thelatter day, but this is the greatest of themall—the voice of the turtle shall be heardin the land. This marvel falls into two1parts, which we shall consider briefly andin order. IAN MACLAREN. 551
Text Appearing After Image:
what ails you, dominie? are any of your laddiesgoing back on you? I. A new posture evidently implied, when an animal that has gone upon itsbelly for ages shall arise on its hind legsand walk majestically through the land;and, 11 II. A new voice distinctly promised, when a creature that has kept silencefrom generation to generation will at lastopen its mouth and sing melodiously amongthe people. 11 Itsmichty, summed up Drumsheugh, after the exposition had been fully rel-ished. Yell no hear the like o thatnoo-a-days in a coonty. Its weel teltalso, for the best story is no worth hearinfrae a puir hand. The corn needs to becleaned afore ye tak it tae mearket. The story is not without merit, andthe doctors modesty was all the more striking as he was sup-posed to have brought theturtle into its present formout of the slenderest ma-terials, but the dominiehas some far neater things. AnythingDomsie had was from Aberdeen, and notto be compared, he explained, with Perth-shire work, being very dry
