uerisque ? I haveonly to tell a story of one of those fellowswho are ever looking about, looking about;and how this one met her. He was after-ward not a bit ashamed of having soughtsentimentalities—since he had succeededin finding one; and, so, I may as well lethim tell his own story of The Lady InThe Box. II. The lobby was crowded, and it promiseda good house for the famous comedian.Alone with only Tom Levin, I envied every-body who seemed to be married, or on theway to that end. I forgot that many ofmy friends who had succeeded seemed tohave made a mess of it. I only remem-bered that most of the people and thepretty girls I might have called on,wouldnt care to see me on an eveningwhen only greater intimates were privi-leged. You see, I was at the play withTom Levin only because I had nothingbetter to do. The play, a fine old comedy, done by agood company, carried a contagious geni-ality, and the audience were inclined tomake the applause frequent. But 1 was 43 THE LADY IN THE BOX.

SHE WAS IN A BOX WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE: TWO OLD PERJ GENTLEMAN. all the time looking about; and lookingabout I first saw her. She was in a box with a lot of people:two old persons and a gay young gentle-man who seemed to have been dining—it was not the simple cheer of unaidedspirits. The two old persons might havebeen her father and mother; the gentle-man looked irascible, like your notion ofa successful banker, though successfulbankers, like other celebrities, never lookas you expect them to. The elder lady was a study for a dowager.But, as for the real lady of the box—thelady who took my fancies at once and whohas held them since—she was pretty, asyou can imagine. She was half a blondeand half a brunette. She was vivaciousand sweet and admirably gowned, and,of course, bored by the young man. Idisliked him tremendously.
